Ewan McGregor To Play Black Mask In BIRDS OF PREY

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

I’m calling it now: Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is going to be something quite special. It wasn’t too long ago that we heard acclaimed cinematographer Matthew Libatique would be acting as the film’s Director of Photography and the growing main cast is quite promising. And now finally the film has found its Black Mask!

It has been reported that actor Ewan McGregor is in final negotiations to star as Gotham City mob boss Black Mask. This news isn’t too surprising to hear as McGregor was one of two actors previously named as being in the running for the part back in late September.

Frankly I think this is an outstanding choice. I know most fans seemed to prefer Sharlto Copley for the role, but McGregor seems like the more daring choice for Black Mask to me. We all know he’s a talented actor, but he rarely ever plays more villainous roles. In fact, the only one that immediately springs to my mind is actually something of a plot twist and didn’t give McGregor much time to show his darker side.

And while the Dark Knight himself almost certainly won’t appear in Birds of Prey, I think there’s something to be said about unusual casting choices for Batman characters. Just look at the track record for the past twenty-nine years! First it was Michael Keaton, then Heath Ledger and then Ben Affleck. For one reason or another, quirkier picks seem to be the ones that pay off the most in the Batman filmography.
