Quentin Tarantino’s STAR TREK May Not be R-Rated After All?

Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

When news came out that Quentin Tarantino was tackling an R-rated Star Trek movie, it brought a renewed interest into the franchise.

However, fans’ expectations may need to be set to “disappointment”. Speaking with Hey U Guys, Simon Pegg – who plays Scotty in the rebooted Star Trek films – was asked about Tarantino’s script for the potential film.

I don’t think he’s written an R-rated Star Trek script. I think what happened is he went to JJ with an idea that he has had for a while. I remember he told us about it a long time ago. I think he told me and Edgar [Wright] about it a long time ago. He just put it to JJ and JJ is considering putting it into a writing room. We got an email just saying ‘Guess who came into the office the other day!’ So, I don’t know much about it, other than the fact that it is sort of in the mix. So, we will see.

While Pegg isn’t exactly writing off the idea that we’ll see an R-rated Star Trek film, it wouldn’t be a surprise if that idea doesn’t go forward. Paramount has done a pretty good job with the rebooted series, starting with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009. With the studio in need of audience friendly franchises, the idea of an R-rated entry in the sci-fi franchise may be a bit too risky for Paramount.

With that being said, it’s encouraging to see that Abrams already has a team in place to develop Tarantino’s idea. The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith is currently set to write the screenplay for the project.

Are you guys still interested in Tarantino’s idea for an R-rated Star Trek film?

  1. So, Tarantino’s only involvement is “Story Idea By…”? That’s more than a little disappointing.
