THE EMOJI MOVIE Is To Blame for GET OUT Director Jordan Peele’s Retirement From Acting
Director/Writer Jordan Peele is a creator who has been firing on all cylinders. He was part of the Key and Peele duo where he had an extremely successful five season run and he has also received many accolades for his work in the movie Get Out. Written, Produced and Directed by Peele himself, the departure from comedy was surprising for fans, but when the movie came out, it was received with a whopping 99% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. An incredible score for a horror film, to say the least. Along with the rave reviews and the killer score, Peele also won a Directors Guild Award yesterday in Outstanding Directing for a First-Time Feature. Needless to say, the man has been having a great couple of months with the Academy Awards to look forward to along with our Revengies Awards!
All has not been sunshine and rainbows for Peele though, who during his acceptance speech for his Directors Guild Award, illuminated the reason why he has decided to retire from acting. As an actor myself, I completely understand where he is coming from and I do not blame him in the least. Sadly, it all ties to a role offer for Sony’s The Emoji Movie.
“I was offered the role of Poop – this is true. I would not make this up. I was offered the role of Poop; I was like, ‘That’s f–ked up.’ I told my manager, ‘That’s f–ked up, let me sleep on it.’ I came back the next day, I said, ‘Well, what are they offering?’ And they said, ‘Oh, well they’ve already given it to Sir Patrick Stewart.’ I was like, ‘F–k this’… That’s a true story.”
For someone as successful as Peele and the comedic talent he has to bring; to play the role of “poop” is honestly, a bit insulting. Regardless of that fact, he has an Academy Award nomination to enjoy and his film is up for Best Picture. Things could be worse and he’s doing just fine. I look forward to seeing what he has up his creative sleeves in the future.
