Mahershala Ali Will Be BLADE In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Let’s all thank Alfre Woodard for appearing in Marvel TV and Marvel films. She was Mariah Stokes in Luke Cage, then appeared in a small role in Captain America: Civil War as a different character. Woodard’s Luke Cage co-star Mahershala Ali is set to do the same thing.
In a stunning reveal at Hall H, Ali walked on stage and put on a Blade hat as the logo appeared behind him. It was confirmed to be a film, not a Disney+ series. Blade is making his triumphant entrance into the MCU, and there is no one better to play him.
The Hollywood Reporter talked to Feige after the presentation, and revealed that Ali approached them about the role. “When Mahershala calls, you answer,” Feige said. Ali said he wanted to play Blade, and if you are intelligent, like Feige is, you let the two time Academy Award winning actor who is one of the best of this generation to ever do it, play Blade! So that was that.
The Marvel series that are on Netflix technically take place in the MCU, but their connection was never truly established. Only loose references were made, and those seemed shoe-horned in. So there is no issue with Ali playing Blade after playing Cottonmouth.
Besides bringing Wesley Snipes back, who played Blade in three movies, Ali is the best choice. Marvel announced that the best titled movie ever, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness would be the MCU’s first foray into “horror”. Blade will be a nice encore in that genre after the stage is set by Strange. I fully expect Snipes to have a cameo or a supporting role now, especially after Spider-Man: Far From Home set a precedent for something like that.
The MCU is now the “Mahershala Cinematic Universe” and I am here for it. There is no release date for the film, but it won’t be any earlier than 2022.
