Tom Cruise Surprised Everybody With The TOP GUN: MAVERICK Trailer
This is a topic for another time, but Tom Cruise is the last true “movie star” left. The paradigm has shifted, and the line has blurred between television and movies. Brands sell tickets more than a star. But Cruise is the exception. So when he shows up, people listen. Cruise happened to show up at San Diego Comic Con, and brought a little treat with him. Out of nowhere, he dropped a trailer for a sequel 34 years in the making. So here it is, the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick.
This tells you nothing about what story the movie is actually telling, but it doesn’t really matter. Like the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, images are enough. All people want is Tom Cruise doing insane things in an airplane. (An airplane which I exclusively revealed to you back in September, by the way.) The trailer delivers that.
We know the movie was delayed in order to get the stunts exactly right. Cruise appeared on Conan O’Brien’s show later that day to reiterate that. All of the stunts are practical. No CGI was used. He calls Top Gun: Maverick a “love letter to aviation”. You can watch that clip below.
Conan isn’t the first person to ask about the absence Kenny Loggins’ song “Danger Zone” in the trailer. The song is almost synonymous with the original film, and you can tell by Cruise’s smile that it is absolutely in the sequel.
The stunts look insane, the little bit of character interactions we did get look like we are in for a treat there, too. The first movie is so revered that it will be damn near impossible for Maverick to live up to it. Navy enlistment went way up after the first movie, and I can imagine a spike happening after this one is released as well.
Even if it isn’t as good as the first one, Cruise will still do what he does best, and give us something on screen we’ve never seen before. That is worth the price of a ticket alone.
Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters June 26, 2020.
