Tim Miller Discusses New Terminators In TERMINATOR: DARK FATE

Read Time:1 Minute, 50 Second

While the big draw of Terminator: Dark Fate is the triumphant return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner, the trailer showcased a couple new Terminators fighting with each other as well. Director Tim Miller is the one making this all happen, and he sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about them. Some of the details might be considered spoilers to people who want to go in completely clean.

“There’s this new future because of what Sarah did at the end of Terminator 2, and it’s worse than ever. And that gives us the opportunity for these new characters. Gabriel comes from something that is not Skynet, but it’s like Skynet. And Mackenzie comes from something that Kyle Reese and the Resistance did. I tried to keep Gabriel a bit grounded while still interesting; I feel his new weapons and abilities are right for our times but not so ridiculous that it just turns into a visual effects superfest. And the same with Mackenzie’s character — I really liked her origin story. We did an early writer’s room and Joe Abercrombie came up with her as this super soldier from the future, but it comes at a cost to be one of these people. They’re the first people to die, they’re the shock troops who protect the rest of humanity, and her readiness to sacrifice is a really interesting way to come at a character.”

Gabriel Luna’s Terminator certainly did things in the trailer that had never been seen before, but still felt like the next natural evolution of what came before it, so I think Miller nailed it there. As for Davis’s character, the hybrid notion seems like it will be the emotional anchor of the film, and it sounds like there is a lot to it, so it should work well.

Dark Fate ignores everything after Terminator 2, so this is the start of a brand new timeline. From everything I’m hearing, it will be better than the current mess the Terminator franchise has. It will be interesting to see where things go when the movie comes out.

Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters November 1.
