Chris Rock Enlists Samuel L. Jackson and More For His SAW Reboot!

Read Time:2 Minute, 13 Second

The Saw franchise rocked the ’00s, delivering one hit movie after another annually, starting in 2004. When the first one opened to $18 Million, on a budget of only $1.2 Million, it signaled the start of a phenomenon. And so for the next six (6!) years, we got another Saw every October around Halloween.

The Saw series put James Wan and Leigh Whannell on the map, with the former becoming one of the most successful producers and directors in all of Hollywood. But someone else is now spearheading a fresh take on Saw, and it’s none other than legendary comedian Chris Rock.

As we reported back in May, Rock conceived the story for a Saw reboot that he’s also set to produce and star in. And now we’ve gotten a very exciting update on who else will appear with Rock on the big screen when this new Saw arrives in theaters next year: Samuel L. Jackson!

Bloody Disgusting first reported- and it was later confirmed- that Nick Fury himself, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of the film. Variety would later add that he’s set to play Rock’s father in the movie.

Jackson isn’t the only new cast member, as Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Marisol Nichols (Riverdale, Resurrection Blvd) have been enlisted as well.

Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, had this to say about the Saw reboot adding this talented trio to the cast:

“We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the ‘Saw’ canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of ‘Saw’ on full tilt.”

In the initial announcement for this reboot, there was talk of trying to really make it feel like “an event film for horror fans,” and adding a titan like Jackson will certainly help.

The last attempt to revive this franchise didn’t quite work out, with 2017’s Jigsaw failing to make much noise.

But something that bodes well for this reboot is that they’ve brought back the director James Wan entrusted the franchise to after helming the first film. His name is Darren Lynn Bousman, and his three Saw sequels (II, III, and IV) managed to maintain and build upon the franchise’s momentum before it fizzled out during its latter half.

Let’s see what he can do with a story that came straight from Chris Rock, an avowed Saw fanatic.

You’ll be able to see the Saw reboot on October 23, 2020. Just in time for Halloween.
