THE PROM: Ryan Murphy Taps Streep, Grande, Kidman (And More) For Netflix Adaptation
Ryan Murphy, the man responsible for the American Horror Story anthology stories, recently signed a megadeal with Netflix. One of his next projects will be adapting the broadway musical The Prom for the streaming service, and he is enlisting an all-star cast to do so.
Deadline reports that Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Ariana Grande, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells will all play key roles in the movie.
“In Prom, Streep will play Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony winner who teams with Corden’s Barry Glickman in a flop musical about Eleanor Roosevelt. After career-ending reviews, they decide — along with Broadway babies Kidman as Angie Dickinson and Rannells (Book of Mormon) as Trent Oliver — to champion a cause to rehabilitate their careers. They find one in Emma, a high school senior in Indiana who isn’t allowed to take her girlfriend to the prom.
Grande will star as Alyssa, a popular daughter of the head of the PTA. Awkwafina will play the group’s publicist Ms. Sheldon, and Key will play Streep’s love interest and Emma’s ally, Principal Hawkins.
A nationwide search led by casting director Alexa Fogel is on to fill the role of Emma.“
The musical was a hit on Broadway, and Netflix is hoping it will be the same on screen. Murphy will film the movie in December, and release it in theaters in the fall of 2020 for an awards run before it hits Netflix.
The cast apparently came together quickly, and each choice was Murphy’s first choice. They all said yes instantly.
Between this and the George Clooney movie that Netflix just bought the rights to, they are making some big moves to compete with incoming slew of streaming services happening. Disney+ launches in November, and both Warner Bros and NBC Universal are developing their own streaming services as well. (Which means The Office is leaving Netflix, just FYI).
So if Netflix becomes the place for book and Broadway adaptations, that is not a bad reputation to have. I.P. is king, and Murphy seems to be delivering the goods on this one.
