Box Office: TOY STORY 4 Won the Weekend!

After a few weeks of less than stellar debuts, and straight up bombs, a small indie company has come in with a big hit, and the third film in a very popular franchise.

It seems that Disney is owning the summer at the box office. If you consider April 26th, the release day of Avengers: Endgame, to be the start of the 2019 summer box office season, then Disney has held the top spot five times out of the last nine weeks. It should also be noted that, except for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the other four movies released (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Dark Phoenix, and Men In Black: International) were all considered disappointments at the box office.

After three lackluster weekends, Disney has once again taken the top spot at the box office with Toy Story 4.

The fourth entry in Pixar’s extremely popular franchise easily came in at number one with $118 million! That’s the highest opening ever for a Toy Story film, and the third best for Pixar. Only The Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory, both sequels to very popular Pixar films, beat the fourth Toy Story film with openings of $182.6 million, and $135 million, respectively.

Any thought there was of franchise fatigue here was obviously misplaced.

Coming in at a distant number two is a quite different type of toy story… that of the murderous kind. Child’s Play, the latest in the assembly line of reboots, remakes, and reimaginings opened in a very distant second with $14 million. Fortunately for the studio, this only had a budget of $10 million, so everything from here on out is gravy.

Coming in at number three, a spot that it’s held for the last 3 (!) week’s is Disney’s Aladdin. It only fell 29.5% from last week to finish the weekend with $12.2 million. It’s at $287.5 million domestic, and will cross the $300 million mark this week.

Tumbling three spots to number four is last weeks number one flick, Men In Black: International. It only managed $10.7 million in its second weekend. That’s a week-to-week decline of 64.2%, and a domestic total of $52.6 million. Ouch!

The Secret Life of Pets 2 fell three spots to number five with $10.2 million. It’s domestic total is now at $117.5 million.

Annabelle Comes Home, the third in the series, and the fifth film in The Conjuring Universe, hits theatres next week. I’m thinking Toy Story 4 will drop around 50%, which is common for a film that opens so big, and finish its second weekend with about $60 million. The last first Annabelle film opened with $37 million in October of 2014 and ended its run with $84.2 million domestic. The second film, Annabelle: The Creation, opened a little below that in August of 2017 with $35 million, but ultimately outgrossed its predecessor at the domestic box office ending with $102 million. I expect this one may open a little higher, but probably won’t make quite enough to unseat Toy Story 4.
