With the Infinity Saga now finally drawn to a close and the third phase of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ending in a few weeks’ time with Spider-Man: Far From Home, eyes are turning ahead to the new generation of Marvel superheroes. For starters, Scarlett Johansson will finally star in her own Black Widow solo film directed by Cate Shortland, while filmmaker Chloe Zhao will explore the history of The Eternals with Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden. There’s also that Shang-Chi film in the works that will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and now the first rounds of casting rumors are beginning to surface!
That Hashtag Show reports that actors Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Black Mirror) and Ross Butler (Riverdale) are both among the otherwise mysterious list of candidates that Marvel Studios is “interested in” meeting with for the titular lead role, and added that the studio is hoping to meet with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story alum Donnie Yen for a potential role that is “being kept under wraps” in Shang-Chi, potentially being a role described by the site as being a “wise, old statesman.” Provided these rumors are accurate, the easy guess is that Marvel Studios want Yen for the real Mandarin that was previously alluded to in the 2014 short film All Hail the King.
I have to say that all of these names sound exciting to me, even if it still appears to be rather early on in the casting process for Shang-Chi. Personally I really like the idea of Lin as Shang-Chi. As time goes on, it does seem that while the Power Rangers film didn’t set the box office ablaze in 2017, it has gone on to be a source for new talent with two of Lin’s co-stars already shining brightly in other projects such as Stranger Things and the recent Aladdin remake.
