Dan Aykroyd Talks GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Connection To Original
In case you don’t know, Jason Reitman (son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman) is making a Ghostbusters sequel. We know that Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Bill Murray will be involved in some capacity. But the film is set to really focus on a new characters played by Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon. The movie takes place in the same universe as the first two, and Aykroyd teases a really cool connection to the original.
Talking to GameSpot, Aykroyd had this to say:
“Jason came up with this idea, which is just so good, everybody got it right away and understood. It will connect, better than anything, to the first movie. That’s about all I can say about it, but the two movies will connect, in a way that hasn’t been done before.”
Reitman elaborated a little bit on Aykroyd’s comments, which makes this even more interesting.
“This is what I’ll say. You don’t know their connection, and they don’t know their connection yet either.”
Here is why this is really interesting. At the Ghostbusters Fan Fest a couple weeks ago, Reitman dug up old, never before seen footage from the original movie: outtakes, alternate takes, deleted scenes, etc. He said he was using it for something, but couldn’t say what or why. There are a couple of things I could think of.
Using the footage as flashbacks is the most obvious and easiest way to incorporate it into the sequel. You don’t really have to do anything to it. You write around it. A more interesting reason is if he’s using that footage for some sort of time travel adventure. They could seamlessly blend the old footage with newly filmed footage to create something special. Another reason could be more technical. If they wanted to have the late great Harold Ramis appear as a ghost, Reitman could be using old scenes of Egon as reference for some CGI work or something like that.
Either way, it sounds like Ghostbusters fans are in for a treat when the movie hits theaters in 2020. We don’t know much about it, but what we do know seems pretty spectacular. The only thing that could make this better is if Reitman could lure Rick Moranis out of retirement, but this gets better by the day.
