Aside from the addition of Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn, part of why DCU fans are excited for his upcoming follow-up of 2016’s Suicide Squad is the wave of newcomer characters that will be joining the team. While most of the fan-favorites from the first film are back, namely Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, a good deal of hype has been circling around newcomers such as Idris Elba in a yet-to-be-determined role, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior as a female iteration of the Ratcatcher. One other potential newcomer will be WWE Raw star wrestler John Cena, who is rumored to potentially be playing Peacemaker in the film.
In a new interview with The Wrap, Cena opted to remain coy on the topic and simply teased that the film “would be a tremendous opportunity for growth.” He added, “You have to get everything buttoned up before you can make it official, I don’t want to say anything… I will just say that if that opportunity presents itself, then I will be very grateful to take it.”
Obviously the statement isn’t much of an update, but my guess is that Cena is opting to play coy here while talks finish up or is under some sort of NDA for now. After all, our newly christened Dark Knight Robert Pattinson also had to keep mum as he finished up the audition process he was in after reports initially surfaced that he had entered talks for a deal. I would imagine that Cena will fully confirm his involvement in The Suicide Squad as production of the film draws closer. As if that isn’t enough, he has been confirmed to appear in Fast And Furious 9 by Vin Diesel himself. So Cena is circling many franchises at the moment.
