Steven Spielberg Is Writing A Horror Series For Quibi… With A Twist
At some point, we have to ask ourselves how many new streaming services will be made before audiences say there’s too many? Currently we have streaming service giants such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime at the top, while competition is beginning to form with the upcoming Disney+ streaming service and DC Universe continues to be… er… DC Universe. For now. Joining the scene next April, in its own peculiar niche way, will be Quibi.
The new service will providing new video content for mobile devices with shorter episode lengths than the lengthier and more expensive rival shows on other streaming services, with a reported two hour long series via seven-to-ten minute long episode length running times.
Joining this peculiar new service will be none other than one of Hollywood’s most illustrious filmmakers, Steven Spielberg, with an all-new horror series. Quibi co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg spoke about Spielberg’s involvement this past weekend, saying, “Steven Spielberg came in, and said, ‘I have a super scary story I want to do.’ He’s writing it himself. He hasn’t [written anything in a while] so getting him to write something is fantastic.”
Katzenberg also said that Spielberg has “written five or six episodes (which Quibi calls “chapters,” like a novel) of a 10- or 12-chapter story” and that the new series has a working title of “Spielberg’s After Dark.” However the most unique factor of this new show, aside from the streaming service hosting it, will be how the show will be seen.
According to Katzenberg, Spielberg gave the unusual request of making it so that the show can only be watched at nighttime. Utilizing the technology within modern cellphones that track when the sun rises and sets in the area it is currently located in, Quibi have created a clock that will appears on its customers’ phones that tick down until the sun sets in its area. The show will be viewable once said countdown ends and then become unaccessible again once a new clock starts its countdown when the sun rises.
I have no idea what to make of this streaming service or the show, but I have admit that there are some intriguing concepts being crafted here. Here’s hoping that Spielberg and the people at Quibi are able to strike gold with this series.
