DC Universe Responds To ‘False Rumors’ Of The Service’s Demise

Yesterday was a shaky day for fans of the DC Universe streaming service. First came word that Swamp Thing had been cancelled, then came a second wave of reports that the service itself was in trouble. We covered some of the uncertainty around the service’s stability back in April, when it was initially revealed that Swamp Thing had been cut short.

But the service itself has fired off a response to some of the claims and assumptions that Swamp Thing‘s apparent demise is a testament to the fact that The DC Universe is going under. In a post on the Community section of the service’s main site, they released the following statement:

“DC Universe continues to develop new shows, new seasons, new stories, more availability, and more platforms. We’ve got a lot of exciting plans for our other shows in the works, and look forward to sharing more in the coming months. That’s all the information I have to share at this time. Now that you have the goods, we will be going back through the threads and removing the false rumors and speculation that this choice means DC Universe or any of our other original series were affected.”

Of course, even this “debunking” should be taken with a grain of salt, considering they’d never come out and say “Yeah, we’re in a heap of trouble and this thing you’re paying for may not be around much longer!“

So, for now, we sit and wait.

Personally, I’ve heard near-constant murmurs since the platform’s launch that the subscription numbers for it were way lower than anticipated. That’s not to say that things haven’t recently turned around, but all I’m saying is that none of what’s gone on these last 24 hours surprises me.

I think their best play may be to simply turn the DC Universe into one section of the upcoming WarnerMedia Streaming Service. There’s rumors of it including a couple of networks bundled into a single price, possibly including HBO and Cinemax. So if it’s going to be a service with different sub-channels within it, in my mind it makes a ton of sense to just make one of those channels The DC Universe. The brand would also get a nice rub from being available alongside all of the WB’s premium content, as opposed to it existing alone on its own streaming island.

But those are just my two cents.
