Box Office: GODZILLA is the King!

Godzilla: King of the Monsters roared into theaters this weekend with $49 million. That’s a darm good opening, but it should be noted that it’s considerably less than 2014’s Godzilla- which debuted with $93 million. It’s also less than the $61 million that 2017’s Kong: Skull Island opened with. All three films exist in the same “Monsterverse,” and next year we’ll get to see the two titans do battle in Godzilla vs. Kong next spring.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of legs this film has. If it follows the path of the previous two films, it could end with about $150 million; which would be the lowest domestic take of the series to date. It’s got a B+ CinemaScore, which is a pretty good sign. But we’ll have to wait until its second frame before we can determine if word-of-mouth will push this thing into real profitability.

Also, these films aren’t just made for us North Americans, and tend to attract quite the global audience. To that end, it picked up an additional $130 Million overseas, giving Godzilla: King of The Monsters a $179M global opening.

After opening at number one over the Memorial Day weekend, Disney’s Aladdin had to settle for second place this week. The remake held up pretty well declining only 53.7% with $42.3 million. Its domestic total is now at $185 million.

Rocketman, the Elton John biopic, opened in third place with $25 million. The budget was a relatively low $40 million, so we’ll place this one in the win column.

The other wide release this weekend, Ma, entered the race at number four with $18.2 million. From what I hear the movie isn’t bad, and that’s largely due to Octavia Spencer’s performance. Word on the street is she saves the film.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum fell three spots to number five with $11.1 million. It’s now at $125.7 million domestic, easily outpacing both of its predecessors. In fact, in another week or two, it will eclipse the combined domestic take of both John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2 combined!

Next week sees the release of Dark Phoenix, the last film in Fox’s mainline X-Men series. I’m definitely checking this out, will you?
