Disney Now Has Full Control Of HULU

All hail our mouse overlords. When Disney bought all of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment properties there were many things at play. Fox owned a controlling stake in the streaming service Hulu. Would that become Disney’s too? The answer is yes. Everything will belong to Disney eventually.

Disney and Comcast (who owns a minority share of Hulu) announced a new deal that gives Disney a controlling stake in the streaming service, while Comcast still owns 33% of it. (Comcast owns NBCUniversal, so that allows more non-Disney content on Hulu).

Comicbook.com has a concise breakdown as to what the deal looks like.

“The two companies have entered what is called a “put/call” agreement, which means that there is a five-year tentative contract in place. As early as 2024, Comcast can require Disney to purchase NBCUniversal’s 33% ownership stake. Likewise, at that time, Disney could require NBCUniversal to sell that stake at fair market value.“

Either way, that means in 2024 Disney can buy Hulu outright. Part of the deal is that Comcast will stream its NBCUniversal content through 2024 as well.

The impact of Hulu’s new owners have already been felt. There is plenty of Marvel (another Disney owned company) content coming. Animated shows such as Kevin Smith’s Howard The Duck and Patton Oswalt’s MODOK will hit the service, that will eventually lead to a team up called The Offenders. Then it was just recently announced that Gabriel Luna would be reprising his role as Robbie Reyes from Agents Of SHIELD in a live action Ghost Rider show on Hulu as well.

This is a big thing by itself. But it’s even more worth watching due to the impending arrival of Disney’s other streaming service, Disney+. It feels like the divide will be family friendly (PG-13 and below) content on Disney+, and the more adult-oriented stuff on Hulu. But who knows if that is actually how things are determined. It does feel like if any of the former Netflix Marvel shows get resurrected, it would be through Hulu, not Disney+.

Disney owns your entire childhood and two streaming services. They are dominating at the box office, and will soon do so on TV. It is easier to just accept Mickey Mouse as your one true ruler now. Bend the knee. It’s inevitable.
