The CW Officially Picks Up BATWOMAN (With A Teaser), KATY KEENE, And NANCY DREW!
We have our Batwoman, Nancy Drew, and Katy Keene! Variety reports that three of the six pilots The CW shot have been greenlit for series in The CW’s 2019-2020 season. The Jane The Virgin spinoff, Jane the Novella will not move forward, The Lost Boys adaptation pilot will be reshot off cycle, while the Glamorous series is still up in the air.
The Batwoman twitter account released a video of star Ruby Rose in gear as their way of announcing the series was coming. First appearing in last year’s Elseworlds crossover for the Arrowverse, Rose was met with contention by some fans when she was cast as the blunt Kate Kane, a lesbian, a lover for social justice and a highly trained fighter, with a want to rid the streets of crime. Caroline Dries is writing and executive producing the show, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns and David Nutter also executive producing. Marcos Siega directed the pilot episode, and will executive produce the show as well. The production companies are Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
Katy Keene is a spinoff of the channel’s hit Riverdale, following a wannabe fashion designer Katy Keene played by Lucy Hale. It’ll follow her and other aspiring artists as they chase their dreams. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi will write and executive produce the show. Berlanti, Schechter and Jon Goldwater will also executive produce. Maggie Kiley has directed the pilot and she will also executive produce. The product companies are Berlanti Production, with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television’s Studios.
Nancy Drew follows Nancy after her high school graduation, when she is kept from college by a family tragedy. She gets engrossed in a murder investigation and finds more than she bargained. Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writes and executive producers for the show. Lis Rowinski and Melinda Hsu Taylor will also executive produce. Larry Teng directed the pilot and will co-executive produce. CBS Television Studios and Fake Empire are the production companies involved.
Batwoman and Katy Keene were definite locks for series, especially Batwoman with Arrow having a shortened season 8. The member of the bat family will probably take over Arrow‘s slot come January, and who knows. We might even see her in the Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover this fall.
Batwoman and Nancy Drew are the two shows I am most excited for. Especially after Rose had expressed an innate desire for being a superhero, and being able to visit kids in hospitals in costume, ad representing the LGBT community. And that costume is spectacular. Nancy Drew was a huge part of my childhood, but I am wary about the adaptation by The CW, especially with Riverdale being so different from the Archie Comics.
