Jon Watts Says Micheal Keaton Isn’t In SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME
If I had to choose who my favorite villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far is, I suspect the answer would be Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Adrian Toomes (aka the Vulture) in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. While more recent villains such as Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger and Josh Brolin’s Thanos also have valid claim to the title, I quite appreciate the small league approach that was taken with Vulture. His backstory was surprisingly relevant and Keaton’s return to the superhero genre was an utterly magnetic performance that resulted in one of the most nerve-wrecking sequences in the MCU to date. So when word surfaced last year that Keaton would be returning in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, I was quite excited to see him join the fray!
In a new interview with Fandango however, director Jon Watts confirmed that Michael Keaton would not be appearing in Far From Home nor his daughter Liz played by Laura Harrier in Homecoming. Watts simply stated, “Keaton is not in the movie. And Laura is not in the movie.”
As much as this saddens me, the news makes sense. After all, Toomes was last seen entering prison at the end of Homecoming and even if he were to escape or be released, it’s been well established at this point that a vast majority of the story in Far From Home will take place across Europe. With Jake Gyllenhaal debuting as Mysterio and Peter Parker being recruited by Nick Fury to face four mysterious Elementals, it’s hard to picture a scenario where Toomes could appear in a sizable role in the film without it getting overly busy.
Then again, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if fans get to see Michael Keaton in a brief cameo as one of the film’s inevitable post-credits scenes. After all, Toomes does know who Spider-Man’s secret identity is!
