Jon Watts Discusses SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

We’ve known that Spider-Man: Far From Home would be the first movie in the MCU after audiences experienced Avengers: Endgame. But there was some question as to when the movie was set. When the new trailer released yesterday, it was revealed it was post-Endgame and that there would be spoilers for the movie if you haven’t seen it yet. (Just like this article, so please don’t read if you haven’t seen Endgame yet.)

The director of Spider-Man: Far From Home is Jon Watts, who directed the first Spider-Man entry into the MCU, Homecoming. He talked with Entertainment Weekly about balancing the post-Endgame stuff, and the standalone Spidey stuff.

It was always acknowledged that our movie was going to happen right after [Endgame], and there were going to be a lot of unanswered questions and a lot of repercussions. [The question was], how do we make a movie that’s in that world and deals with those stories but is also still the fun Spider-Man movie that we want to see? So that was a fun creative challenge for us.”

As far as the universe as a whole, it is now 2023 in the MCU. People who didn’t get snapped are 5 years older. Watts confirms that Ned (Jacob Batalon), MJ (Zendaya), and Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) were all snapped. The rest of their class is 5 years older, and no longer in high school. That is why the core cast is the same, despite the time difference.

The trailer states that Mysterio is from an alternate universe. Watts even acknowledges that statement:

“Endgame opened up the possibilities for a much, much larger universe. All that stuff sort of converged in the perfect way for us.”

Given that Mysterio is a big fat liar, this might not be the case. Watts may just be protecting the films secrets. Marvel let the Russos change footage in the trailers to protect the secrets after all. Even the very first Far From Home trailer had different dialogue, like Nick Fury saying it was “so nice to meet” Spider-Man, when they met at Stark’s funeral. Sure, Fury believes Mysterio is from the multiverse, but he’s also been gone for 5 years. Watts enjoyed playing with that aspect of Fury’s character.

“He’s been gone for five years, too. He’s the guy who’s always known everything about everything. He’s the guy who created the Avengers, and now here he is, returning after five years and seeing a very, very different world. So that’s a situation we’ve never seen him in before. The guy who’s always been in control not having the same level of control is interesting.”

Do I think there will be a multiverse in the MCU? Sure. It would be the easiest way to introduce the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. But I have a feeling Mysterio isn’t telling the truth. He likes to be shrouded in mystery after all.

Regardless, Far From Home looks like a ton of fun, and doesn’t seem to be short on classic Spider-Man moments. It seems like the sequel will keep the spirit of the character alive, and won’t lose the identity of the character. That’s all a Spidey fan can hope for.
