Werner Herzog Calls THE MANDALORIAN “A PHENOMENAL ACHIEVEMENT”

I find it somewhat hard to believe, but I currently feel more excited to see the first season of the Jon Favreau-produced The Mandalorian, the first live action series in the Star Wars franchise, than I am for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This is by no means a slight against the final installment of the Skywalker Saga or its predecessor from Rian Johnson, but rather a testament to the sheer level of talent involved in this new series. One name that especially has me excited is acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog (Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht), who will appear in the series as a villain of some sort.

In a new video interview from AP Entertainment, Herzog spoke about the upcoming series.

“The Mandalorian, I was invited by Jon Favreau — who started this whole series — to act,” Herzog explained. “I looked at the screenplays and I had the feeling, although I know very little about Star Wars, I had the feeling yes, I could do it. It’s a character in whom you cannot trust. And I said yes, I can do that.”

Even more exciting was Herzog’s praise for the tactile filmmaking craft on display for the series. He continued, “Green screen, green screen everywhere, in the camera, motion control moving there. All of a sudden you have a phenomenal step forward. As an actor, you see the entire planet on which you are [standing]. You see the landscape, you see the formation. The camera could even be handheld and move in-between us, sees the same landscape, it’s not green screen and artificiality. It brings movie-making back where it should be. It’s phenomenal, [a] phenomenal achievement.”

If you’re curious as to what sort of filmmaker Herzog is, he once ventured to remake of one of the most iconic horror films ever (Nosferatu) and not only made a version that’s on par or arguably superior to the original, but shot the film twice in with the same cast in two different languages rather than just dub it in English. If you ever have a chance to watch one of his films, I highly recommend it and I can’t wait to see him in this show. Who knows? Maybe he’ll be talked into directing an episode for a later season at some point!
