Vin Diesel Confirms John Cena Will Join The Family In FAST AND FURIOUS 9
Avengers: Endgame is dom- *reads headline* – err, sorry, habit. Fast and Furious is one of Universal’s biggest franchises. There are two new entries coming soon. The first one is the spinoff Hobbs and Shaw starring franchise alums Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, coming in August. The next one is a proper sequel in Fast and Furious 9, which is filming now. (I really hope they go to Germany so it can be Fast And Furious: Nein!)
Dwayne Johnson confirmed he will not be in 9 due to scheduling conflicts. But even if he was available, it is doubtful he would appear, due to his beef with series star Vin Diesel. However, Diesel is bringing another big WWE alum into the mix: Jon Cena. Diesel posted the news on Instagram.
Cena did his signature wave next to Diesel, wearing a suit. No word on what role he is playing, but if they are on the set, and that is what Cena is wearing in the movie, then chances are he is some sort of government agent, filling the void of Johnson’s Hobbs. The “Pablo” that Diesel refers to is Paul Walker – who was killed in a car crash back in 2013. Diesel has kept Walker’s memory alive throughout every entry of the franchise since his death.
It is curious what Paul Walker would make of the feud between Diesel and Johnson. I’d like to think he would be some sort of peacemaker. Fast And Furious 9 is rumored to be the penultimate episode in the series. Diesel said there would be 10 movies, and a couple of spinoffs. One of those is Hobbs And Shaw, the other is rumored to be an all-female team-up adventure. Hopefully Johnson can return to the parent series. Seeing Diesel and Johnson make peace would be a perfect family reunion metaphor that the series wants to be known for. It would also be a ton of fun to see Johnson and Cena together on screen. Maybe for what is assumed to be the final movie, Fast 10, they can make that happen.
Everyone else is expected to return, and I am sure there are more casting surprises to come.
Fast And Furious 9 is slated to hit theaters May 22, 2020.
