STAR TREK Going Where Nickelodeon Has Gone Before
An animated Star Trek show is reportedly being developed by the Emmy winning producers of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Dan and Kevin Hageman. StarTrek.com reports the show is being aimed at teenagers and it will air on Nickelodeon. The show’s concept is about a group of teenagers who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship and take it on adventures. The lawless kids search for meaning and salvation in the universe.
The show will be produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, and will be executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, the Hagemans, and Katie Krentz. It’s not related to the animated Star Trek comedy Lower Decks currently in the works by CBS All Access. Lower Decks is being written by Rick and Morty‘s head writer Mike McMahan, and won’t air until some point in 2021.
The show will add to the current Star Trek shows going around, including CBS All Access’ Star Trek Discovery, and the Star Trek Picard with Patrick Stewart returning as Jean-Luc Picard. The cast for the Picard show has been fleshed out, though Rosario Dawson would like to be included in that realm. CBS also has in development a spin off of the Star Trek Discovery show with Michelle Yeoh. The most recent film for the beloved science fiction show got shelved after it lost its director. This is after Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine stepped away from the project after salary concerns. However we do still have a Quentin Tarantino film for the franchise on the horizon, that will star Abrams’ cast apparently.
This sounds intriguing, and might be a way to draw a new generation of Trekkies into the fandom. It really doesn’t sound like my cup of tea, but if it brings in new fans then I’m all for it!
