Jon Watts & Tom Holland Talk SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

With Avengers: Endgame finally here, it’s time for the media machine to start shifting focus over onto Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Confirmed recently to be the final film in Phase 3 of the MCU by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the followup to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming will be audiences’ first real look at a Post-Endgame world and likely help fans begin the transition over into the next decade of films from Marvel Studios. However, what about Peter Parker himself? Where is the web-slinger’s head at after all of the cosmic shenanigans he’s had to go through recently?

According to director Jon Watts, the answer is as far away from superhero-ism as he can possibly be for a bit. In a new article from EW, Watts revealed, “Peter’s ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least. This film is about the world telling him, ‘It’s time for you to step up and grow up, kid,’ and he’s saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.’

Superpowers aside, the hesitation of growing up is a rather familiar and relatable situation for many young adults. Of course, that was always one of Spider-Man’s strongest elements for fans, as actor Tom Holland learned. After gauging fans’ reactions from Homecoming two summers ago, the actor noted that fans really connected with the situations Peter found himself in during the film.

Everyone really enjoyed the fact that throughout [Homecoming], there’s always something you can relate to with him,” Holland explained. “So in this film, especially, we tried to tailor the script in a way so that we could hit so many different relatable scenarios, so that not a single person in the world felt left out watching this movie.

Of course there’s quite a lot of interest in the addition of Jake Gyllenhaal to the cast as one of fan-favorite baddies in Spider-Man’s rogue gallery Mysterio. However there’s a bit of a twist in how Peter will interact with Mysterio in Far From Home. Watts explained, “If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle.

If you look at any interview I’ve ever done prior to this movie and someone asked me, ‘Who would you work with if you could work with any actor?’ I would’ve said Jake Gyllenhaal,” Holland added. “And when I found out it was him, I was stoked, but also really nervous. But Jake absolutely was more than I ever could have expected.
