Showtime has announced the cast of actors who will join lead star Gael Garcia Bernal of Mozart in the Jungle fame in the pilot episode of a new thriller drama series titled Hombre from director and creator Jonas Cuarón, son of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón of Children of Men and Gravity fame. Joining Bernal will be Marisé Alvarez (The Vessel), Greg Grunberg (A Star Is Born, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Pepi Sonuga (Under the Silver Lake), Adriana Santos (Taken) and a newcomer named Noah Reyes. Production is set to begin at the end of the month in Los Angeles.
Hombre reportedly focuses on an undocumented Mexican-American family man named Marcos Osuna (played by Bernal) and the desperate lengths he goes to after his wife Leticia (Alvarez) is detained by ICE. Leticia is described as a “smart and selfless wife… whose detention proves to be the ultimate test on her marriage and close-knit family.” Reyes will play their pre-adolescent son named Anthony. Sonuga will play a kind-hearted immigrant named Adanna who is a co-worker of Marcos’ at a motel. Grunberg plays a well-intended ICE trainee named Norm. Lastly Santos will play Leticia’s sister Teresa.
Admittedly I’m not very familiar with Bernal or Cuarón’s previous body of work, I am very intrigued by this show. It goes without saying that the show’s central thematic content on undocumented immigrants living in the United States means Hombre will likely be very topical when it premieres, assuming the pilot is approved and a series is greenlit.
