CHILD’S PLAY Reboot Producer Talks Differences From The Original

Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

A big thing about reboots is what it has to offer outside of the original. Jon Favreau is dealing with this with his remake of The Lion King, which is coming later this year. A new version of Child’s Play is coming soon too, and producer (and one-time The Flash movie director) Seth Grahame-Smith remarks on how they tweaked the story.

Grahame-Smith tells Cinemablend:

“We sort of lean into more of the A.I./Kaslan story and hint at a Chucky that is driven by something different than he is in the original series, when he’s Charles Lee Ray and he’s just a truly psychopathic killer in the body of a doll. [Also, there is] the mother/son story, the emotional component of the movie, which I feel like the movie really delivers. And then above all that, just the intensity, the gore, the fact that the movie is rated R, that it really does go there when it goes there. I think the movie looks big, is much bigger than a lot of movies that are our size – very affordable movie, we are. But we had big ambitions. Those are, I’d say, the primary things we’re going for.”

The trailer shows that he is a demonic A.I. that can manipulate technology, which is fitting for today’s technologically heavy age. Combine that with the uber voice talent of the legendary Mark Hamill, and this could be something special.

It does sound like the crew took it seriously, and really cared about the source material. They wanted a fresh take that would delight audiences, but also stay true to the thing that made horror fans enjoy it in the first place.

If you need more, Fandango has a new still from this new Child’s Play.

I’m not a huge horror guy, but the first teaser with Aubrey Plaza had my curiosity. Then when Hamill was announced as Chucky, it had my attention. I’ve been coming around on horror lately. Things like Get Out and It were some of my favorite flicks of the past couple of years.

Child’s Play hits theaters June 21st.
