THOR 4: The Pitch Has Been Made?

Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

The character of Thor has evolved from the joke of the team to the powerful God of Thunder we all knew he could be in Thor: Ragnarok (which is why that movie made our list of Best Soft Reboots), and continued that pattern of awesomeness in Avengers: Infinity War last year. And it sounds like the work director Taika Waititi did in reinvigorating the character may not be done just yet.

Thor 4 has apparently been pitched according to Chris Hemsworth’s Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson (maybe this was Taika’s new mystery MCU film?), who told the Los Angeles Times in a recent interview promoting her new movie Little Woods.

Thompson was asked about the future of her character Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While she couldn’t say anything about Endgame, she did have an apparent update on a new Thor movie:

“I heard that a pitch has happened for [another “Thor” film]. I don’t know how real that intel is, but I hear that the pitch has happened. I think the idea is Taika [Waititi, who directed ‘Ragnarok’] would come back.”

So does this mean we’ll see Chris Hemsworth return to the series? In an exclusive interview with Yahoo, Hemsworth said this about the character of Thor.

“When we came into Ragnarok, I was sort of exhausted of what I’d been doing and a little sort of underwhelmed by what I was putting out there, you know?”
“That was no fault of any director or writer, that was me personally. It felt like I’d put myself in a box with what the character could do. So on Ragnarok, it was about breaking all the rules, and kinda going ‘as soon as it feels familiar, do something different’, and Taika [Waititi] – the director – had the same vision, and the same, I guess, guts to just roll the dice and [do the] ‘anything goes’ kind of thing.”
“That was so liberating and freeing, you know, to sort of break away who the character was prior.”

And he also addressed the big question of whether or not he’d want to come back:

“I’d play this character for as long as anyone would let me. I’ve loved it so much. But the combination of this many characters in this Phase Three, as Marvel calls it, you’ll never have this interaction with this many people again. Who knows what the future holds and whether they do prequels and sequels or whatever, I’d be open to anything. But right now, this is where we finish up.”

It really sounds like Hemsworth has renewed passion for the God of Thunder. And bringing an original Avenger to Phase 4 of the MCU would be a great move by Disney to tie everything together.

The assumption from myself has always been that the original six Avengers would no longer appear in future MCU movies. Black Widow made clear that would not actually happen, and now we’ve heard Hawkeye and Kate Bishop will have a Disney+ show of their own. Chris Evans has said he’s done playing Captain America, and Robert Downey Jr. has implied he’s done- yet that could all end up being misdirection.

Aside from breathing new life into the character, Thor: Ragnarok was the highest grossing Thor solo film, so Marvel Studios would be crazy not to hear what Waititi has in mind for a follow-up. Maybe they’ll even let him bring back Korg and Miek!

Can someone please get Mark Ruffalo on the phone? I’m sure he’d spill all the details on whether or not we should be getting excited for a fourth Thor film!
