How excited are people for the return of Game of Thrones? Variety is reporting the HBO show was, by far, the #1 show on TV on Sunday night with a solid 17.4 million viewers. This included 11.8 million viewers who watched it on the linear channel.

It’s a solid start for the series now in its eighth and final season. For comparison, This is a jump from the 16.1 million viewers that tuned in for the season 7 premiere. The show also opened to solid critics ratings with a 93%.

The premiere may highlight the effectiveness of HBO’s strategy of relying more on its streaming services. Despite the overall increase in viewership, ratings on the linear channel were down as 12.1 million tuned in on cable and satellite last year.

Game of Thrones is consistently HBO’s top rated show and earns great ratings with average ratings per episode that climb as the week rolls on! Here are some of the average ratings per season according to Variety:

-Season 5: 20.2 million

-Season 4: 19.1 million

-Season 3: 14.4 million

-Season 2: 11.6 million

-Season 1: 9.3 million.
