Daniel Craig seems to be very determined to make sure that he ends his tenure as James Bond on a high note with Bond 25!
The Guardian reports that Craig has enlisted the aid of BBC’s Fleabag showrunner, writer and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge to “liven up” the script of Bond 25. As you may recall, the film has most recently been rumored to be titled ‘Eclipse‘ and will act as Craig’s swan song as Agent 007, with Beasts of No Nation and True Detective filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga attached to direct. This would also seem to be the second script doctor recruited to tweak Bond 25‘s script after it was reported back in February that Scott Z. Burns had been brought on to help.
The Guardian added that Waller-Bridge was sought out by Craig during her recent stay in New York, where Craig resides with his wife Rachel Weisz, for a series of stage performances of Fleabag. In particular, Craig approached Waller-Bridge for her sense of “wit and quirkness” and wanted to incorporate more of an off-beat style of screenwriting to the script for Bond 25.
Personally I’m not very familiar with Fleabag or any of Waller-Bridge’s work, so I’m not entirely sure what I make of this news. However I am intrigued by Craig’s desire for humor and a more unique style of writing in his final Bond film and how that might be brought to life with a director such as Fukunaga. If I had to wager a guess, Craig likely wants to have more levity sprinkled between the more serious, dramatic parts of the story rather than the film be an all-out comedy.
