Star Wars Fatigue? Pfft! The Franchise Is Taking A Break After EPISODE IX

A couple of days ago, Star Wars Mark Hamill made some comments about audiences potentially feeling some fatigue towards the franchise. He also went ahead and shared some thoughts on how he would’ve done things differently for his Luke Skywalker in these new movies. But it doesn’t sound like Hamill has to worry too much about audiences getting burnt out and tired of these voyages to that galaxy far, far away…

According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the series will take take a bit of a break after this December’s Star Wars: Episode IX.

“We will take a pause, some time, and reset,” Iger told Bloomberg. “Because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.“

This comes after an initial relaunch of the Star Wars franchise that ambitiously seemed to want to release one movie per year for the foreseeable future. The general idea had been, We’ll relaunch with Episode VII in 2015, follow that off with a standalone movie in 2016, then Episode VIII in 2017, followed by another standalone in 2018, then Episode IX in 2019.

And audiences assumed that Lucasfilm would simply rinse and repeat that release model after Episode IX. But, perhaps because of the somewhat mixed response to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the downright flopping of Solo: A Star Wars Story, it sounds like the studio is going to slow things down a bit.

We already know they’re working on some fantastic Star Wars content for the Disney+ streaming app that’s set to arrive later this year. We know that The Mandalorian will strive to capture the spirit of the original trilogy. We’ve also heard about the series that will star Diego Luna and follow his Rogue One character, Cassian Andor. And there’s always rumors of others on the way (like an Obi-Wan Kenobi series).

So perhaps they’ll focus their efforts almost exclusively on the small screen for a couple of years, and let the appetite for another big screen adventure build up a tad. They could then floor longtime fans by announcing a 2022 release date for one of the films Game of Thrones‘ D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are working on (which are rumored to be set in the Old Republic!)

Regardless, this is probably good news. Let the franchise breathe a bit. Let Benioff and Weiss create what they want without some rush to hit a 2020 release date. Let Rian Johnson continue to conceive and develop his new trilogy.

I don’t think Star Wars fans would mind, cause they’ll be busy catching all of the goodies coming to Disney+.
