It seems the road back to the Space Jam has a few more turns left before fans finally see the long awaited sequel to the 90’s family classic! We’ve known for awhile now that Black Panther writer-director Ryan Coogler was set to produce Space Jam 2, but in a new article from THR, it seems Coogler is also acting as co-writer for the latest draft of the film’s script. Joining the Creed and Fruitsvale Station filmmaker on screenwriting duties is Sev Ohanian (Searching).
While it was recently reported that Star Trek: Discovery actor Sonequa Martin-Green was in negotiations to join LeBron James in the film’s cast as James’ wife, THR adds that the studio is having difficulty securing other current NBA stars such as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and James Harden to appear in Space Jam 2 alongside James, partially due to contractual obligations with Nike’s competing shoe companies (Curry and Harden are sponsored by Under Armour and Adidas respectively). As some movie trivia fans might recall, the 1996 original came about after the massively successful “Hare Jordan” commercial for Nike, so the shoe company has a stake in the sequel.
Additionally THR mentions two other original characters that have yet to be cast for the sequel; a teen character named “Dom” as the film’s second lead and a “best friend” character named “Malik,” who is inspired by James’ real life childhood buddy and producing partner Maverick Carter.
Lastly, I’m not sure if this was previously reported anywhere or not, but the site adds that Arrival and Solo: A Star Wars Story D.P. Bradford Young is attached to the film as its cinematographer. In my humble opinion, Young is a seriously impressive get, on par with Coogler’s involvement as producer. His work in the world of film has been nothing short of impeccable for the past several years and his distinctively lyrical style should add a very interesting visual twist to this hybrid film!
