STAR WARS EPISODE IX: Rian Johnson Okay With a “Retcon”, Talks Other STAR WARS
Cinema Con was last week, and the news was flying. Rian Johnson was out promoting his movie Knives Out and spoke to MTV News, when they asked about Star Wars: Episode IX. He seems like he wants to be an “average” movie goer, just be entertained, but check it out below.
.@rianjohnson is just as excited for J.J. Abram’s #StarWars Episode IX as we are, and he tells us at #CinemaCon he hopes that the directors keep taking the universe to new heights: “I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do” pic.twitter.com/D7Jh5SqgeT

Johnson gets asked about the lineage of Rey’s parents, his Star Wars movies, and the Star Wars movies from Game of Thrones show runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. He sounds most excited about the Weiss and Benioff movies, to see what they can explore with their trilogy. He updated on his scripts for his trilogy, saying the scripts have been fleshed out, and they’re working out the finer details. But the big topic, was if JJ Abrams would “retcon” Rey’s parentage, after she was deemed a nobody in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson said he’d rather have an enjoyable movie over everything else. If it makes the movie better so be it.
“Like I said, man, I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back. I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. I’m also psyched about the things they are going to explore beyond what we’ve seen already. To me, that’s kind of the most exciting stuff is pushing the limits of seeing stuff we haven’t seen before in Star Wars.”
That’s the best way to think about it. People should want for the best movie possible. Many times a theory can go awry, but when you go into a film with no expectations set, oftentimes you can be surprised with how much you enjoy it.
I definitely have hopes and dreams for Rey to be a Skywalker so don’t utterly crush me because of it. But I’ll be happy either way it goes. Even though I want her to be a Skywalker, The Last Jedi has been my favorite Star Wars movie since it was released. You can still enjoy something and appreciate it for what it is, and still theorize and have your theories disproven. No matter what, the end of the Skywalker Saga deserves a great ending and I genuinely hope Abrams can give it that. No matter what he does.
Star Wars Celebration is this week so stay tuned here for more Star Wars coverage. Maybe we’ll get a trailer? Maybe we’ll get title? Goodness knows, but I’m excited. Are you? Who are Rey’s parents? Let us know in the comments below!
