To reboot or not to reboot? That is the question and we may have an answer. The new Suicide Squad movie will be called The Suicide Squad. In an interview with Comicbook.com Peter Safran (Shazam! producer) said:
“It’s not Suicide Squad 2. It is not a sequel. I will leave that alone but, yes, it’s called The Suicide Squad.”
With the DC film being taken over by James Gunn there has been some confusion if this was a sequel or a reboot. Maybe with this confirmation (thanks to Safran) fans can put the first film on the back burner completely and focus on an entire new film. Now, of course there are characters returning for The Suicide Squad, so it’s easy to get very confused. But this all seems to be part of a concerted effort to draw a clear line of distinction between the first film and this next one.
I believe DC wants to do exactly that. Let’s all move on from the first film while still acknowledging that it exists but fully accept and embrace the new spin being put on it The Suicide Squad– who seems to have some epic stuff in mind. In order to truly appreciate Gunn’s take on the film, acceptance is key. Gunn has had success in the past dealing with a team of miscreants and making them play nice, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt, regardless of how tied this one ends up being to the first movie.
What do you think of this insistence that The Suicide Squad is not a sequel?
