Box Office: SHAZAM! Thunders To Number One!
It would seem that WB/DC have hit their stride with their superhero films, at least as far as far as the box office is concerned. Yes, Wonder Woman was a hit, but Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League under performed. Fans were psyched when Aquaman hit theatres at Christmas and, not only was it well received by audiences, but ended up breaking $1,000,000,000 worldwide in the process! The question was, can Shazam!, the next film on the DCEU slate continue the success of Aquaman? We got our answer this weekend.
Shazam! hit theatres and opened at number one with a wonderful $53.4 million! If you add in the early screenings from a couple weeks ago, its at $56.7 million domestic. I know, you’re probably thinking, “But wait, how is Shazam! a hit with that opening? Superhero movies usually open to much larger numbers.” Well, as Einstein said, “It’s all relative, baby.” While most superhero movies usually cost upwards of $150 million, Shazam! came in with a much lower budget of $100 million. With an A Cinemascore, and no real competition until Avengers: Endgame opens in three weeks, Shazam! should have a nice little run at the box office.
The new adaptation of Stephen King’s bestseller Pet Sematary opened at number two with $25 million. Critics were lukewarm, giving the horror flick a 61% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences didn’t seem too thrilled either rating the film at a measly C+ on Cinemascore. Fortunately the bill for Sematary was only $21 million.
Dumbo fell two spots to number three with $18.2 million. That’s 60.4% define from last weekend, when it opened at number one with $45.9 million. Ouch. Its domestic box office is now at $76.2 million.
Jordan Peele’s Us dropped two spots to number four with $13.8 million. It’s now at a spectacular $152.3 million domestic.
Captain Marvel also slid two spots to number five with $12.6 million. Its domestic total is now a robust $374.1 million. In worldwide box office news Carol Danvers has crossed the $1,000,000,000 mark!
Next we get the release the R-rated reboot of Hellboy. I don’t feel the buzz around this one, so I’m thinking Shazam! may hold the top spot. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
Here’s the full top ten. As always, worldwide numbers include the domestic takes, so if you need to know what the international numbers are you’ll have to break out the calculator.
