The Suicide Squad - Viola Davis

THE SUICIDE SQUAD: Viola Davis Set To Return As Amanda Waller

Read Time:1 Minute, 49 Second

It was announced today by The Wrap that Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad will be produced by Peter Safran and Charles Roven, and release in theaters August 6, 2021, five years after the original film, directed by David Ayer, was released. Safran called The Suicide Squad a “total reboot”, but with Jai Courtney returning as Captain Boomerang, and now Davis, is that really the case?

Gunn was brought on to write the script for The Suicide Squad back in October of last year, and was given the director’s chair in at the end of January this year. The sequel will follow the same formula as the original, but bring in new members, with rumors of Killer Frost making her silver screen debut, a hunt for an Alien Femme Fatale (which we exclusively reported), and others. Idris Elba will be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot, so we will have familiar characters on screen. There’s rumors of the team heading to the middle east for this edition.

Davis is currently the star of ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, and has starred in The Help, Fences, and Widows. Amanda Waller is described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.”

And if Davis’ return wasn’t enough of a confirmation that this isn’t a reboot,
Discussing Film has heard Joel Kinnaman is set to reprise his role as Rick Flagg as well. Neither of these reports have been confirmed by Warner Bros., but with the film set to start filming in the fall of this year, we should hear confirmations soon.

I’m excited to see Davis return in the role. She truly was one of the shining stars of Suicide Squad. Her role is important and affirms the idea of continuity between the current structure of DC’s Cinematic Universe.
