CAPTAIN MARVEL Hits The Billion Dollar Mark At The Box Office
The billion dollar club has a new member! Captain Marvel surpassed $1 billion in sales at the box office worldwide Wednesday night. Marvel Studio’s first solo movie about a female superhero has grossed $358 million in North America, and has made $645 million overseas. Captain Marvel is the seventh movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to join billion dollar club, and is the 18th Disney movie to do so. It definitely won’t be the last to join, with Avengers: Endgame tickets on sale now, and already breaking records. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gross $18.5 billion to this date. Maybe it’ll hit $20 billion by the end of the year?
Wonder Woman, the DCU’s first female-led superhero film showed Hollywood that audiences worldwide were interested in seeing them on the big screen, generating $841 million during its run. Wonder Woman: 1984 will be hitting theaters in June 2020 for its “not a sequel” return for the character. Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot celebrated Captain Marvel‘s success in theaters as well, proving we can all be united no matter the fandom we prefer.
Captain Marvel is the last movie before Avengers: Endgame, 21 movies into the “Infinity Saga”, Marvel’s first female-led superhero film. It was co-directed between Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The cast included Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, and Anneetter Bening, as well as de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg. If you’re interested in reading Tony Artiga’s spoiler review, click HERE.
Captain Marvel is currently in theaters now, and will return in Avengers: Endgame April 26th. She’ll try and help the surviving members of the snap defeat Thanos.
“Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Law’s enigmatic commander. But before long, Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And she’s got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls — the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.”
