Franco’s ZEROVILLE Finally Arriving To Theaters After Years In Hollywood Limbo!

At the risk of sounding pretentious, the life cycle of a film is a rather peculiar concept to think about. Typically, I think you could consider the various stages of making the film its ‘pregnancy’ and then everything that follows its theatrical release to be its lifespan. However, not unlike us fleshly beings, films are capable of ‘dying.’ For instance, many a film from the silent era are lost forever and there are some valid concerns about how many modern films shot on digital cameras could potentially vanish for good due to the lack of a physical source material to preserve. Additionally some films never get finished or find themselves lost in time after completion. Such was seemingly the case for James Franco’s Zeroville.

Deadline reports however that Zeroville, an adaptation of the 2007 novel by the same name by author Steve Erickson, will finally find its way to public release on the big screen after being stuck in a bizarre state of release limbo for four years. Initially the film was picked up by Alchemy after the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Mere months after TIFF however, the company went bankrupt and the film has since been an unfortunate victim of Alchemy’s financial woes.

According to Deadline, the United States distribution rights for Zeroville were finally acquired by NAGRA-KUDELSKI and will be released through their myCinema digital content distribution system later this fall.

Also of note is that the comedy features a pretty high profile cast that includes Seth Rogen, Megan Fox, Joey King, Will Ferrell, Dave Franco, Danny McBride, and Jacki Weaver.

Personally I don’t know much about this film and I’m not even sure I personally have much interest in seeing Zeroville for myself when it arrives in theaters this Spring. However as I described above, it’s a fascinating case in how the metaphorical life cycle of films don’t always follow a specific cut-and-dry path. It’s just something that makes me wonder how often or rare this is for a film and its creators to experience.
