Box Office: DUMBO Flies to the Top Spot!
Once again Disney is in the top spot (even if by not as much as they’d probably hoped). Instead of with Marvel, this time it’s with a live action remake of the animated classic Dumbo. While this one didn’t reach the heights of Beauty and the Beast‘s $174.7 million (or even Cinderella‘s $67.8 million) opening weekend, $45 million is nothing to scoff at.
Audiences really took to Dumbo giving it an A- Cinemascore, while critics were split down the middle giving it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This divide between audiences and critics is becoming more and more normal.
Jordan Peele’s Us dropped one spot, and 52.7%, to number two with $33.6 million. That brings the domestic total to a spectacular $128.2 million. Peele’s last film, Get Out, earned $176 million at the domestic box office. Us should have no problem surpassing that by the end of its run.
Disney’s other film in the top five, Captain Marvel, dropped one spot to number three with $20.5 million. Its domestic total is now at a remarkable $353.8 million. Internationally Carol Danvers has banked a stellar $990.6 million. It’ll be crossing a billion dollars this week, becoming Disney’s first film to do so this year.
The YA drama Five Feet Apart held steady at number four with $6.2 million. Its domestic total is now $35.8 million.
Unplanned, the other new wide release this weekend, opened to a surprising $6.1 million. That’ almost exactly what the film cost, so anything else it earns is just gravy.
This week we finally get the release of the other Captain Marvel, DC’s Shazam! I already have tickets for Saturday. Will you be going to see it this week? Let us know in the comments below; or, if you were one of the lucky people who saw it early, let us know what you thought!
Here’s the full top ten. As always, worldwide numbers include the domestic takes, so if you need to know what the international numbers are you’ll have to break out the calculator.
What’d you think of this week’s box office?
