GAME OF THRONES Documentary To Focus On The Making Of The Final Season

The history of television actually isn’t that long. Within that history, there is even a shorter list of “event television.” Things people will talk about forever, even if they never saw it. Things like the M*A*S*H* finale, the Friends finale, the Lost finale, and now, the final season of Game Of Thrones.

A week after the series finale airs, HBO will release a documentary chronicling the making of the final season. Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch is a feature length documentary made by Jeanie Finlay.

“Made with unprecedented access, GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers. Much more than a “making of” documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.”

If you’re like me, you always want to know the behind the scenes stuff. Things like that fascinate me. The “making-of” featurettes on the special features are the first things I go to when I buy a film. Then I listen to the audio commentary for more insight.

For such a dense, beloved, and high quality show, a documentary is the perfect medium for this. If you are looking for “secrets” or “gossip”, this won’t be that. HBO wouldn’t sanction it. But if you want interviews, and breakdowns of certain moments, then The Last Watch will be perfect. It will be great to see what certain actors think of certain scenes that will inevitably break our hearts.

It feels like Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch will be in a similar vein to The Director And The Jedi, a documentary featured on The Last Jedi home release. I loved that peek behind the curtain, and it sounds like this one will be even more in depth.

Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch will premiere Sunday, May 26th at 9PM EDT.
