Call it a hunch, but I think The Eternals will be a very special entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it arrives on the big screen in a year or two. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems as though Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has big ambitions with this particular film. First the studio selected Chloe Zhao of The Rider fame to helm the film, easily one of the most exciting choices made yet for a director for an MCU film and hopefully indicating that more unique visions of Marvel characters are waiting in the wings. In the meantime though, the film’s first casting choice has surfaced… and Lord Almighty, is it a big one.
THR reports that Oscar-winning actor Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in one of the roles for The Eternals. Although Jolie previously starred in a film adaptation of Mark Millar’s graphic novel Wanted in 2007, this marks her first time starring in a superhero film specifically. The site notes that it remains unclear currently who Jolie will be playing in The Eternals, but noted that one of the known aspects of the film’s story is a romance between the cosmically-fueled human Ikaris and an Eternal fascinated with living among mankind named Sersi. Perhaps Jolie is playing Sersi then? Or perhaps one of the film’s villains?
I really can’t help but be excited for this film. I’m not going to pretend to act like I’m very familiar with the Eternals in the comics (yet), but every single report I’ve heard about this movie over the past year has impressed me a great deal.
