New Tease For GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Brings The Fear Factor
I don’t talk about it nearly as often as I do Dune or upcoming DCU films such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman or Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, but I have mentioned in previous articles here at RTF that I’m excited for Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Last year’s teaser trailer was far and away the most memorable thing to come out of San Diego Comic Con 2018, with an ingenious use of Claude Debussy’s ‘Claire de Lune’ as the score to accommodate the apocalyptic CGI kaiju festivities between its titular lead, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. Then another exciting trailer hit the Internet last December and now more footage is arriving as the film’s May release date draws ever closer.
Most recent is the following TV spot from Warner Bros. titled simply Intimidation. Watch it below!
First off, I’m happy to hear the Comic Con version of ‘Claire de Lune’ back in this new TV spot. Much like how Gareth Edwards’ 2014 predecessor made frequent use of Gyorgy Ligeti’s ‘Requiem’ in its promotional trailers and TV spots, I find the use of ‘Claire de Lune’ to be a really interesting way to musically compliment the blockbuster footage of giant CGI monsters fighting one another. As apocalyptic as the film appears to be, there’s also a distinct sense of beauty present in how the footage depicts Godzilla and the other three kaiju in the film and the music is a clever way to underline that element.
Secondly I’m actually a little surprised at how much new footage seems to be in this particular TV spot. It generally all appears to stem from sequences in the film we’ve already glimpsed at in past trailers, but I appreciate the many new shots included here. Between films like Us, Shazam!, Pet Sematary, Avengers: Endgame and Detective Pikachu all on the way in the weeks leading up to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, I’m hoping the wait until then will fly right by for me. I have a feeling this film is going to be rather special…
