FANTASTIC BEASTS: Rowling Spills More on Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s Relationship

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

It has been assumed, but now it has been confirmed by J.K. Rowling herself. Part of the tumultuous history between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald in these new Fantastic Beasts movies is that they were once romantically linked. When it was revealed Dumbledore was gay, and that he was in love with Grindelwald, people started speculating. Then there were hints from Rowling in the past, that Dumbledore and Grindelwald had a relationship as teenagers back in Hogwarts. Fans have been guessing if Grindelwald returned Dumbledore’s feelings, but now, confirmation!

Radio Times got the details from Rowling during a feature for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald Blu-ray DVD. You can read MFR’s review of that movie HERE. She said the following:

“It was passionate, and it was a love relationship. But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know, you can believe you know.
So I’m less interested in the sexual side – though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship – than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships.”

David Yates, the director added: “This is a story about two men who loved each other, and ultimately have to fight each other. It’s a story for the 21st century”. There are many people waiting to see the two men fight in a later Fantastic Beasts movie. While the two men are lovers forever, they will be fighting based on what we heard from the Harry Potter books.

It sounds like Rowling had this planned from the get go. She’s been mapping this out for awhile, and has been trying to bring people’s attention to it. Rowling constantly drops plot details on her social media, fun factoids for any Harry Potter fanatic.

Does this surprise you? Do we just need more Harry Potter books? Maybe a couple Fantastic Beasts-era novels to explore this time period? Let us know in the comments below.
