Box Office: CAPTAIN MARVEL Continues to Soar!
It should be no surprise that Captain Marvel is once again the number one movie in North America. Last week Carol Danvers took the top spot with an astounding $153.3 million debut. This week she held strong at number one with $69.3 million. That’s a decline of only 54.8%. That’s right in line with what superhero movies usually do in their second weekend, as they tend to be very front loaded. It’s now at $266.2 million domestic.
Worldwide it only gets better as the newest Avenger earned an additional $119 million. That brings her international total to $760.2 million. Looks like Disney/Marvel will have another $1 billion grossing film to add to their ever growing list!
Debuting in second place is Paramount’s Wonder Park with $16 million. Oof! It looks like the studio is going to take a hit with this one. The budget is reported to be around $100 million (which seems kind of crazy), and that’s not the opening you want for a flick with that kind of price tag.
The YA drama Five Feet Apart opened at number three with $13.2 million. The story is much better here as that opening nearly doubles the $7 million budget of the film. Put this one in the win column for Lionsgate.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dropped two spots to number four with $9.3 million. It’s now at $135.6 million domestic.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral fell two spots to number five with $8 million. Tht brings the domestic total to $59 million.
Next week sees the debut of Oscar winner Jordan Peele’s Us. Early tracking has it opening to around $50 million. That should be enough to unseat Captain Marvel.
Did you see anything this weekend? (Not just in theaters, but at home, too.) If so, let us know in the comments section below. I finally watched Creed II. It wasn’t as good as the first, but it’s a worthy successor and definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of the series.
Here’s the full top ten. As always, worldwide numbers include the domestic takes, so if you need to know what the international numbers are you’ll have to break out the calculator.
