WONDER WOMAN 1984 Producer Says The Film ‘Isn’t A Sequel’

The future is looking brighter than ever for the next wave of DCU films. Following the massive success of James Wan’s Aquaman late last year, David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! is poised to keep the momentum going with its early praises from critics ahead of its theatrical release in a few weeks’ time and Cathy Yan continues to shoot Birds of Prey. Other hotly anticipated releases include Matt Reeves’ The Batman, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984. Obviously that last film has a lot of baked in hype behind it with the success of its 2017 predecessor. However, according to at least one producer working on the film, fans shouldn’t really see Wonder Woman 1984 as a proper sequel.

In a new article from Vulture, regular DC film producer Charles Roven revealed that the next Wonder Woman film isn’t really much of a sequel and that Jenkins herself feels the same way. Roven stated, “She was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash–Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling. Even though it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humor, a lot of brave action. Tugs at the heart strings as well.

While Jenkins herself wasn’t available to comment for the Vulture article, a source reportedly close to her told the site, “It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many installments.

While it’s nothing too concrete yet, our very own MFR informed me that he has heard murmurs that the film will “play fast and loose” with certain parts of the existing DCU canon, namely undoing Batman v Superman‘s stated lore of Diana walking away from humanity for a century after the end of World War I.
