STAR WARS: Waititi Talks About Directing His Episode Of THE MANDALORIAN

Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

The Mandalorian is the first live-action television series that takes place in the Star Wars universe. It will launch later this year with the Disney + streaming service. Showrunner Jon Favreau brought an all-star group of people together, in front of and behind the camera to make it happen. One of those people was Thor: Ragnarok and What We Do In The Shadows director Taika Waititi.

Waititi has his own distinct style, which some would consider “out there”. His Marvel movie is unlike anything else in that universe, and so people are wondering what his take on Star Wars would feel like.

The Observer caught up with him at SXSW, and asked him about it. Waititi said that while he had to tow a very fine line, he was still able to get some of his signature flair in his episode.

“There’s definitely some of the stuff I’ve learned over the years from working with [Clement] and [Simms] and everyone else back home that I have brought to my episode. But I can’t… It’s a very sacred universe, the Star Wars universe, so I can’t do too much of it.”

He is referencing Jermaine Clement and Paul Simms, who he is doing a What We Do In The Shadows series for FX. It is good that he can have some creative freedom. Doing an episode in a television series is different than directing your own movie.

The director mentioned that the process was similar for Ragnarok, that he had to keep checking with them to make sure things were good.

“I gotta check. Sometimes they’ll say you’ve driven the Marvel truck out of the land and off the freeway and you gotta come back now,”

Waititi is one of the rare people to now work for both Marvel and Star Wars (Favreau has too), and when asked which one had the stricter rules, there was no question.

Star Wars, yeah, easily.”

I doubt we will get a Hutt nude scene, or have something like “The Devil’s Anus” become canon in Star Wars, but at least it’s reassuring that he wasn’t completely stifled creatively.

The Mandalorian should hit Disney + when it launches later this year.
