Box Office: CAPTAIN MARVEL Blasts Off Into The Stars!

Do I even need to tell you which film was number one this weekend? If you read the title, probably not. However, in case you were too excited to get here and just clicked the link without looking, Captain Marvel took her rightful spot at the top!

The newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came out with photons blazing and lit up the box office. It started Thursday night when the film made $20.7 million. Combine that with Friday’s take and Captain Marvel had a first day gross of $61.3 million. By the end of the weekend Ms Danvers powered her way to a domestic opening of $153 million! That’s makes it the seventh largest opening in the MCU overall, and the second largest opening for an MCU solo debut film. Number one is 2018’a Black Panther with $202 million.

Internationally the story is even better with Captain Marvel debuting to the tune of $302 million. That’s a worldwide total of $455 million. Box office prognosticators are already saying Marvel (and Disney) are looking at another film with a worldwide gross north of $1 billion.

I went to see Captain Marvel this weekend with my twelve year old daughter. We both loved it. We are even more psyched to see her join the rest of the team in Avengers: Endgame!

After two weeks in the top spot How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dropped one spot to number two with $14.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $119.6 million. Despite the highest opening of the franchise, The Hidden World is performing a little behind its predecessors, both of which were north of $120 million at this point in their domestic releases. I have to assume Captain Marvel took a big bite out of the family audiences this time around.

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral fell one spot to number three with $12 million. That’s a 55.5% drop from last weekend. Its now at $45 million.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part dropped another 42%, but stayed in fourth place with $3.8 million. Its at domestic cume is now at $97.1 million.

Rounding out the top five is Alita: Battle Angel with $3.2 million. Alita‘s domestic total is now at $78.3 million.
