RUMOR: Gunn’s THE SUICIDE SQUAD Roster To Include King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, More!
When you look at some of the creative flourishes he brought to Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy films, and when you consider the rest of his filmography, it’s pretty clear that writer-director James Gunn likes working with the kind of peculiar, oddball characters that usually line a comic book shop’s back wall. It looks like his interest in obscure characters will also be found in his first foray into the Worlds of DC, The Suicide Squad.
A new report from Collider claims to have the lowdown on who will make up Gunn’s new band of misfits. Up to this point, we’ve heard that Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn and that Idris Elba will be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot. According to Collider’s sources, those two antiheroes will be joined by King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, and Ratcatcher.
Here are some bios for each of them, courtesy of Fandom:
King Shark
“King Shark is a super-villain and humanoid shark. His father is Chondrakha the God of all Sharks, and his mother is a human woman. For years he acted as a serial killer in Hawaii.”
Polka-Dot Man
“Polka Dot Man, also known as Mister Polka Dot, is a Gotham City super-villain and an enemy to Batman. His costume is covered in spots that he can peel off and use for a variety of purposes. They enlarge and transform into objects such as vehicles and weapons.”
Peacemaker
“Peacemaker is a super-hero and soldier who loves peace so much, he’s willing to kill for it. Originally he was a pacifist diplomat who used strictly non-lethal weapons, although over time he developed into a more violent vigilante willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.”
Ratcatcher
“Ratcatcher is Otis Flannegan, a super-criminal and enemy to Batman. Beginning as an exterminator in Gotham City, he turned to crime and became a prisoner in Blackgate Penitentiary. He developed the ability to train and communicate with sewer rats, and began controlling an army of small rodents. In addition to this, he wears a gas mask and uses the poison gasses of a pest exterminator.”
Collider suggests that Ratcatcher is going to be gender-swapped, as Gunn has written the character as a female, and she’ll be something of a surrogate daughter to Elba’s Deadshot.
Lastly of note is the possibility that Dave Bautista may end up playing Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, after voicing his staunch defense of Gunn following last year’s controversial firing at the hands of Disney. He’s also specifically expressed interest in appearing in The Suicide Squad, so it’s definitely something to keep filed away until official cast announcements are made.
Though, really, if he’s not perfect for King Shark, we don’t know who is.
