A Female-Led RUSH HOUR Movie Is Reportedly Being Developed
Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth? If there is a bigger trend than “shared universes” in Hollywood right now, it’s female reboots of traditionally male properties. The next one up? Rush Hour.
ThatHashtagShow reports that STX Studios are developing a female-version of the action comedy that Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan made famous.
The Rush Hour franchise has had more longevity than expected. After 3 movies from 1998-2007, there was a short-lived CBS show, and much talked about 4th film starring Tucker and Chan. There is no word on whether the female one will be a clean break like 2016’s Ghostbusters or in the same universe as the original, like 2018’s Ocean’s 8.
This exact thing is happening with the Bad Boys franchise right now. The 3rd movie is being filmed right now with original stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At the same time, a female TV spinoff in the same world, called LA’s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. The only difference is that this female Rush Hour project is supposed to be a movie.
So a fourth movie with Tucker and Chan could still happen. This doesn’t mean that is scrapped. Both can exist. As far as the cast goes, ThatHashtagShow says the rumor is the studio is going after BingBing Li in the Jackie Chan role. No word on who would star opposite her, but someone like Tiffany Haddish would be a good choice. Though, she’s busy with another female-led spinoff of an existing property – 24 Jump Street. Leslie Jones would be great in the Chris Tucker role as well.
This could work, but its a shame that it has to be attached to an existing property. I understand that brand names breed familiarity, and people are more likely to buy tickets, but I wish this was just being developed as an original property about two female cops. We need more original female blockbusters.
We will be sure to keep you updated on any future developments.
Oh, and just a fun bit of trivia:
Did you know that Revenge of The Fans Editor-in-Chief Mario-Francisco Robles is the nephew of the late Elizabeth Peña, who was one of the stars of the first Rush Hour?
