METAL GEAR SOLID: Oscar Isaac Wants To Be Snake, Director Says The Role Is His If He Wants It

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

Something interesting happened over the weekend when Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac threw his name in the hat to play Solid Snake in a Metal Gear Solid film. This isn’t the first time his name has come up in conjunction with the role, as artist BossLogic did a mock-up of the actor as Snake a few months back. But what’s new this time around is that director Jordan Vogt-Roberts responded to Isaac’s remarks by basically saying “We’re not at that stage yet, but…it’s yours if you want it.

On Sunday, IGN published an interview with the cast of Triple Frontier, which includes Isaac. The gaming-leaning outlet asked the cast if there was a video game adaptation they’d like to be a part of, to which Isaac replied, “Metal Gear Solid, that’s the one. I’m throwing my hat in for that one.”

Less than three hours after those remarks went public, Vogt-Roberts, who’s in the early stages of developing a film based on Hideo Kojima’s classic sci-fi/espionage game series, took to twitter to formally respond:

The tweet is notable for a few reasons:

  • The Kong: Skull Island director reveals that it was his idea for BossLogic to make the digital portrait of Isaac as Snake a few months back
  • He disclosed a private DM exchange between himself and BossLogic that implies there was even more to that chat
  • He concludes by saying “The ball’s in Oscar’s court.

He cautions that the full process of casting Snake hasn’t begun yet, but it’s quite clear that the director has his sights set on the star of Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

So if Isaac is serious about wanting to do Metal Gear Solid, it’s time for the incredibly talented actor to put his money where his mouth is, wouldn’t you say?
