Feige Explains Why Disney+ Shows Will Succeed Where Other Marvel Shows Failed

Read Time:3 Minute, 17 Second

If you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and you’ve been following their exploits since 2008, then you’re well aware of a big elephant in the room when it comes to their original “It’s all connected” mantra. If you’ll recall, the early promise of what this shared universe would bring was that not only were all of the movies set in the same world, but that even TV series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, and The Runaways existed there, too.

While there were initial efforts to create that impression, as years have gone on it’s become painfully obvious that there’s little to no correlation between what’s happening on the big and small screens when it comes to Marvel. Which is fine, mind you. As DC has shown, you can find great success with completely disconnected Film and TV universes. But for Marvel, it’s seen as a weakness because they initially claimed it was all one massive Marvel Universe.

Well, Kevin Feige says that’s about to change.

Earlier this week, we reported that the Marvel Studios honcho had promised that the new batch of shows they’re developing for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service would be “entirely interwoven.” And some of our readers scoffed at that assertion, recalling the way similar promises were made about other post-Avengers Marvel shows.

But in a new interview with Collider, Feige explains why it’s a promise they can actually keep this time. Because part of the problem the first time around was that the Film and TV wings of Marvel Studios were separate. Feige says that everything will be coming from one core nucleus from this point on.

And not only that, he thinks the new shows will be crucial to the MCU post-Endgame.

It’s been extremely additive to the entire creative arc,” Feige tells the site. “Not just of the Disney+ programs we’re working on, but on the entire post-Endgame MCU,” he continued. “Because we’ve been able to weave them. We’ve been able to, for the first time, conceive of them together, and they will be intertwined with each other.

The producer also says there are inherent advantages to calling the Disney+ service home that weren’t there for Netflix and other networks that carry Marvel shows.

I mean, I think it’s gonna be story dependent, and that’s what’s so exciting about the [Disney+] streaming platform, is there aren’t any rules necessarily,” he points out. “For us to have another outlet to tell stories, and to play with medium, and to do, not just deeper dives on characters that we’ve seen many times in the MCU, but haven’t been able to devote six, seven, eight, nine, 10 hours to, is amazing, and is something that we’ve been working on for a while now. And still aren’t gonna announce outside of the Loki series with Tom Hiddleston.

He makes some really good points here. It sounds like it’ll be a totally different ballgame once Marvel launches its Disney+ shows, which are rumored to include series for Vision and Scarlet Witch and Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

As someone who was burned by their failure to honor the initial promise of a massively shared universe that unfolds across both Film and Television, I’m happy to hear this news. I pretty much gave up on the Marvel Netflix shows before even getting to The Defenders when it became clear that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist weren’t really connected to the rest of the MCU.

How about you? Are you excited to hear that these new Marvel shows will be connected? Let me know what you think of all this in the comments below.
