Warner Bros Boss Kevin Tsujihara Promises To Get FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 Right

I love The Wizarding World that was first introduced through the Harry Potter books. Author J.K. Rowling created one of the most incredible universes I’ve ever had the joy of experiencing. But attempts to expand on that universe have not resonated with me. I merely liked the first Fantastic Beasts movie. The second one was a garbled, crowded, messy, unnecessarily complex heap of special effects and questionable canon breaking choices. I still liked it better than Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, but that is a discussion for another time.

Regardless of what I thought, more Fantastic Beasts movies are coming. It was recently announced that the third one would be delayed, and Dan Fogler, who plays Jacob Kowalski in the series, said it’s because of the scope of it. It is set to be bigger than the last two combined. That isn’t necessarily a good thing, since things can get messier when they go bigger. But Warner Bros chief executive of film and TV studio, Kevin Tsujihara, told the LA Times that he is confident that the studio and Rowling will get the third one right.

“The second film didn’t perform as well as the first, but I think we know what we need to do to get the third film hopefully even better than the first one. And J.K. Rowling is really working hard now on that third script, and we’re going to get it right. She has an incredible vision of where she wants to go with this that is incredibly exciting.”

That is reassuring to hear, even if it is a corporate answer. Sometimes going back to basics is best, but that contradicts what Fogler said about the story being bigger. Franchises like this have issues that other movies don’t have though, as Tsujihara points out.

“The hardest part of the franchise is you have such a big core fan base. That fan base really knows the lore and they want to go deep into these characters. But what you don’t want to do is intimidate people. You want to be able to create a stand-alone movie that’s enjoyable for someone who isn’t steeped in the lore.”

Of course I have no way of knowing this for sure, since I am “steeped in the lore”, but I can’t imagine a casual movie goer would have been clear or satisfied with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Parts of it were baffling for people like me who know that universe. Someone looking to get out of the rain for a little bit and just stumbled upon this film would probably be baffled as to what things meant. So if the third one makes it more concise, at least the decisions would make a bit more sense. If Tsujihara is sincere, it is appreciated. Hopefully it shows on the final product.
